BORUTO · Chapter 76
"A Knife to the Heart" (心にナイフを)
Omnipotence Aftermath · The Exile · Kishimoto & Ikemoto · Weekly Shōnen Jump · November 20, 2022
Imagine the screen. The Omnipotence arc has broken the audience's brain. The world thinks Boruto is the traitor. The tension is suffocating. And instead of a massive, explosive final battle, the anime gives us a quiet, horrific gut‑punch in a teenager's bedroom.
Sneaking into his own home, a battered Boruto tries to reason with Kawaki. He thinks they can fix this. He thinks they're still brothers.
Kawaki listens. And then, with cold, terrifying clarity, he explains the brutal math of his love for Naruto: Boruto exists → Momoshiki exists → Naruto is in danger → Boruto must die.
The conversation stops. Kawaki uses his eye to instantly shrink the space between them. The anime cuts to black. When it fades back in, they aren't in Konoha anymore—they are on a desolate, rocky wasteland. A brutal, high-speed clash ensues. Boruto holds back, trying not to kill his brother. Kawaki holds absolutely nothing back.
The fight ends in a fraction of a second. Kawaki summons a chakra-draining blade and drives it directly through Boruto's right eye—the very eye Momoshiki uses to perceive the world. Boruto drops. Sarada arrives, her Sharingan active, bearing witness to the atrocity. Before she can move, Kawaki opens a dimensional portal and kicks Boruto's limp body into the abyss.
The episode's final scene: Kawaki walks back into the Uzumaki household, looks a weeping Naruto and Hinata dead in the eyes, and says: "I killed Boruto."
Credits roll. No post-credits scene. Just silence.
The eye stab.
In a manga, it's a shocking panel. In the anime, it will be a crime scene. The sound design will be what destroys the fandom: the sudden, wet, crunching sound of a blade piercing a socket, followed by an absolute, deafening silence in the soundtrack. Boruto doesn't scream dramatically—he lets out a guttural, choking gasp. The camera won't cut away. Pierrot will force the audience to watch the light leave Boruto's right eye as Kawaki stares at him with dead, soulless apathy. It will be the most controversial and talked-about scene in the entire franchise since Shippuden's Pain arc.
- The weaponization of love — Kawaki doesn't stab Boruto out of hate. He does it because he loves Naruto more than he loves Boruto. It is the horrifying, logical conclusion of the shinobi worldview: a mission is a mission, and if the mission is "protect Naruto at all costs," then fratricide is just a necessary casualty. The knife to the heart is driven by love, which makes it infinitely more tragic.
- The isolation of truth — Omnipotence didn't just change who people think Boruto is; it made him completely alone. The only reason the truth survives is because of a biological accident—Sarada's Uchiha blood. The chapter is a stark reminder that in a world of god-level illusions, raw, physical genetics are the only thing keeping reality intact.
- The death of the child — Boruto and Kawaki were both robbed of their childhoods, but this episode is where Kawaki's officially ends. He makes an adult decision with permanent, irreversible consequences. There is no going back from killing your brother.
Chapter 76 is the single greatest, most devastating cliffhanger in modern shonen anime. It strips away the academy drama, the politics, and the infiltration arcs, leaving only two brothers on a desolate rock, settling their existential conflict with a knife. By having Kawaki successfully execute his plan—mutilating Boruto, exiling him, and lying to Naruto—Kishimoto and Ikemoto perfectly engineer a 3-year timeskip that the audience is practically begging for. The boy who wanted to be Hokage is now a one-eyed fugitive.
If you thought the Darkness Devil in Chainsaw Man was terrifying, wait until you watch a kid stab his brother in the eye because he thinks it's the only way to save their dad. This finale will wreck you.
