JUJUTSU KAISEN · Chapter 193
"Sendai Colony, Part 1" (仙台結界①)
Sendai Kekkai 1 · Gege Akutami · Weekly Shōnen Jump · July 11, 2022
The dust settles in Tokyo No. 2, but the Culling Game is far from over. The camera shifts north to the Sendai Colony, where a completely different kind of horror is unfolding.
Maki Zenin is on a one-woman slaughter.
After the burning of the Zenin clan, Maki's Heavenly Restriction didn't just max out—it "completed." She now emits exactly zero cursed energy. Not low cursed energy. Zero. To the sensors, cursed spirits, and incarnated players trapped in the colony, Maki Zenin does not exist. She is a literal ghost walking through a battlefield, cutting down opponents who never even sense her coming.
Amidst the carnage, she crosses paths with an unlikely ally: Noritoshi Kamo. The former Kyoto student has stepped up as a combat medic, using his Blood Manipulation to separate poisons, heal wounds, and keep stranded players alive in the chaos. It's a raw, unglamorous display of how valuable support sorcerers are in a death game.
But the chapter's true gut-punch comes at the end. A grotesque, massive, cicada-like Cursed Spirit comes crashing onto the scene, moving with terrifying, mechanical speed. Maki stares at it. The chapter clicks into place.
This isn't just a random curse. This is Naoya Zenin. The arrogant, prodigious, speed-obsessed heir who tormented Maki her entire life has had his incarnated vessel collapse—and rather than die, he has mutated into a monstrous, insectoid Cursed Spirit. The boy who looked down on her for having no cursed energy is now a mindless bug, while she stands as an untouchable god of physical combat.
Karma doesn't always knock. Sometimes it drops from the ceiling as a giant flying insect.
The reveal of Bug-Naoya. The build-up is perfect: the chapter frames this new creature as an apex, terrifying predator tearing through the colony. Then the camera holds on Maki's face as she recognizes the lingering, pathetic obsession with speed inside the creature's movements. The realization hits the reader at the exact same moment it hits her: the maggot is Naoya. The fandom erupted with a mix of pure revulsion and absolute poetic justice, instantly dubbing him "Bug-Naoya" or "Cicada-Naoya."
- The evolution of the Zenin curse — The Zenin clan worshipped cursed energy. It produced Toji (a zero-CE god) and Maki (a zero-CE god). It also produced Naoya, a man so consumed by the mechanics of power that when his human body failed, his soul devolved into a literal insect. The clan's toxicity didn't die in the compound fire; it mutated. Maki became a god by losing everything. Naoya became a pest by clinging to what he had.
- Invisibility as isolation — Maki is functionally invisible to the jujutsu world. It's an incredible combat advantage, but it's also a profound metaphor for her entire life. The Zenin clan couldn't "see" her worth. Now, the entire Culling Game can't see her coming. She is permanently isolated by her own perfection.
- The horror of the Culling Game — After the hyper-technical, almost sports-manga vibe of the Hakari vs. Kashimo fight, Chapter 193 pivots hard into horror. Players being slaughtered by an invisible force, a respected heir turning into a giant bug—this is Kenjaku's playground. The game breaks people down into their most primal forms.
Chapter 193 is a masterclass in tonal whiplash. It trades the explosive, joyful kineticism of Chapter 189 for creeping dread and brutal payoff. Maki's silent rampage is terrifying in its efficiency, and Noritoshi's unexpected rise to combat medic adds genuine heart. But the chapter belongs to its final reveal: Naoya's transformation is visually grotesque, narratively poetic, and deeply satisfying. It sets up a fight that isn't just about physical blows—it's about Maki finally exorcising the last rotting ghost of the Zenin clan.
If you love when karma arrives not with a bang, but with the chittering of a giant cursed insect… this chapter will wreck you.
