KAGURABACHI · Chapter 21
"The Kamunabi's Weapon"
Contract (ๅฅ็ด) · Takeru Hokazono · Weekly Shลnen Jump · February 2024
The blades stop swinging. The tension shifts from kinetic to political.
Chihiro Rokuhira's standoff with Hiyuki Kagari and Yui Samura reaches its peak as Hiyuki's aggressive, cloud-manipulating Enchanted Blade, Kuregumo, forces Chihiro to unveil the third form of Enten: Nishiki. It's a brutal, lightning-fast exchange that proves Chihiro isn't just a grieving son with a sharp sword—he's a tactical prodigy who treats his goldfish like loaded chambers in a revolver.
But the real victory isn't won with steel. It's won with a name.
When Yui Samura steps in to de-escalate, the atmosphere changes. These aren't mindless enemies; they are elite Kamunabi sorcerers carrying the weight of a corrupt system. The moment they fully process that the boy standing before them is the son of Kunishige Rokuhira—the man who forged their precious Enchanted Blades—their hostility freezes. The Rokuhira name is a master key that opens doors no amount of slicing can.
Meanwhile, the chapter's creeping dread centers on Hakuri Sazanami. His failed attempt to play hero in Chapter 19 didn't just bruise his body; it painted a target on his back. The Sazanami Clan doesn't tolerate failure, and they don't let their property walk away. As Chihiro secures his new allies, Hakuri is suddenly cornered by the very underworld dynasty he was trying to escape.
The Nishiki reveal against Kuregumo. After seeing Kuro (black) and the standard goldfish, the third form of Enten catches Hiyuki completely off guard. The visual of Chihiro's razor-sharp, hyper-precise strike clashing with Hiyuki's wild, storm-like cloud manipulation is peak Takeru Hokazono action choreography. But the true panel that broke the internet was the immediate aftermath: Hiyuki and Samura's sudden, silent realization of who Chihiro is. The sheer drop in their facial expressions from "we're going to kill this guy" to "oh no, we're going to have to report this to the higher-ups" was hilarious and hype-inducing.
- The weight of a father's shadow — Chihiro spent the Sojo Arc trying to carve out his own legacy through vengeance. But in the Rakuzaichi Arc, he is forced to use his father's name as a tool. The chapter asks: is it weakness to hide behind your father's reputation, or is it wisdom to use every weapon available—even a name?
- The failure of the squire — Hakuri tried to be a knight in Chapter 19 and failed. In Chapter 21, the bill comes due. In a world of sorcerers and Enchanted Blades, a powerless boy's attempt at heroism doesn't earn respect from his abusers; it earns a death sentence. The Sazanami's reaction to Hakuri is the dark mirror to the Kamunabi's reaction to Chihiro.
- Reluctant allies over true friends — Hiyuki and Samura don't like Chihiro. They fear him, and they fear the political implications of his existence. Their alliance isn't built on friendship; it's built on mutual necessity. It's a mature, realistic take on team-building in a dark fantasy world.
Chapter 21 is the perfect pivot point. It resolves the introductory tension of the new arc with a spectacular clash, introduces a devastating new form for Enten, and immediately transitions from combat to political maneuvering. By having the Kamunabi fold not to Chihiro's strength, but to his father's name, Hokazono adds a layer of tragic irony to Chihiro's journey. And by hanging Hakuri's life in the balance as the chapter closes, the Rakuzaichi Arc transforms from a standard heist into a deeply personal rescue operation.
If you love chapters where the pen is mightier than the sword, but the sword is still really, really cool… this chapter will wreck you.
