Pokémon Mario Red & Luigi Green
v1.0 (Completed) · FireRed Crossover Hack · by DogPond4
Kanto. But every Pokémon is a Mario character.
Pokémon Mario Red & Luigi Green isn't just a sprite swap — it's a dual-version crossover overhaul of FireRed where the entire 151-creature roster is replaced with Mario universe characters, each with unique movesets, typings, and evolution lines. Pick your version, pick your plumber, and embark on a journey where the Elite Four are Bowser's generals and your rival is the other brother.
Mario Red features Mario as the player character, Professor Toadsworth, and Luigi as the rival.
Luigi Green flips it: Luigi as player, Professor Toadsworth, and Mario as rival.
But the real star? Nabbit. Five hidden Nabbits are scattered across Kanto — Route 8, Fuchsia City, Cinnabar Island, Viridian City, and Cerulean Cave. Find all five, and you unlock the ability to catch every version-exclusive "Pokémon" in a single playthrough.
The hack promises it's "not just a FireRed reskin" — new Gym Leaders, a new Elite Four, and special evolution methods that turn Goombas into Jack O'Goombas, Shy Guys into Snifits or Bandits based on personality value, and Guardians into Bowser Memory L or M depending on your version.
The Shy Guy evolution split — Shy Guy evolves into Snifit at level 31 with an odd personality value, or Bandit with an even personality value. This is the kind of mechanic that shouldn't exist in a GBA ROM hack made by one person, yet here we are. Fans called it "more complex than actual Game Freak design" and "the personality value tech we never knew we needed." The fact that DogPond4 implemented hidden personality-based branching evolutions in a FireRed engine is black magic.
- The duality of brothers — Mario and Luigi as rivals, not teammates. The hack forces you to pick a side, but the Nabbit hunt encourages completionism. The brothers are separate but equal — and the true ending is understanding you need both.
- The mask of identity — Shy Guys evolve based on hidden personality values. In a game about masks, the mechanic asks: what's under yours? The randomness of personality values mirrors the anonymity of Shy Guy culture — even the game doesn't know who they are until they evolve.
- The nostalgia of plumbing — Every evolution is a reference. Every Gym Leader is a callback. The hack isn't just Pokémon × Mario; it's a museum of Mario history from SMB1 to Galaxy to Bowser's Inside Story. The "reskin" accusation misses the point: this is curation disguised as gameplay.
Pokémon Mario Red & Luigi Green is a love letter with mechanical teeth. On the surface, it's a charming crossover where Goombas replace Rattatas and Toadsworth replaces Oak. But dig deeper — the personality-based Shy Guy splits, the version-locked Bowser Memories, the Nabbit scavenger hunt — and you find a hack that respects both its source materials. DogPond4 didn't just reskin FireRed; they rebuilt its evolution logic to serve Mario's 40-year lore. It's not perfect (some fans compare it unfavorably to Super Mariomon by Alpharad's team), but it carves its own identity through sheer mechanical ambition.
If you love Mario lore deep cuts disguised as Pokémon mechanics… this ROM will wreck you.
